Charlie Wooster and Barnaby West have the task of escorting Dr. Katy Piper and her daughters to join up with the Chris Hale wagon train. Barnaby is forced to shoot a masked bandit who has hijacked the Piper wagon and ends up killing the bandit. The bandit turns out to be a teenage boy, and though Barnaby is cleared of any wrong doing, he carries the guilt of the killing and the judge tasks him with telling the boy's mother of the death. His guilt is manifested in the stigma of a constantly bleeding gun hand, though there is no physical wound. Barnaby ultimately quits the train when it's time to visit the dead boys mother. During the evening while dark and the guard is changing, photographer Daniel Delaney is taking the Indian's picture using the new flash photography. They learn that the town was deserted because of a plague of bats unleashed from a cave nearby, where a professor, now missing, went searching for a treasure left behind by Spanish priests. The Indian Isaiah Quickfox had led the professor to the cave that was used by the Indians in their rituals for boys becoming men. The rumor is that the bats are all blood eating bats and therefore dangerous. Barnaby along with a couple of other boys get carried away with their pranks when they remove the wheel nut on Marcey Jones' wagon who is a drunk. Bill forces Barnaby to fix the wagon by himself but being too weak and young Barnaby breaks his leg when the wagon falls on it. Bill had threatened to punish Barnaby with a whipping as the boy's pranks are out of line and he hasn't changed his mind. Feeling humiliated and angry, Barnaby runs away and breaks his leg---again, the second time very seriously with a compound fracture. Bill feels responsible and starts turning to drinking, and hence endangering the train partly by leading the wagon train into an attack by Apaches. Wealthy businessman Ben Engel is moving his store to the west along with his employee Harry Diel and his beautiful wife Eve Diel and their son Benjie. Ben stayed out of the Civil War by paying Harry to substitute to keep Harry out of jail as his wife was pregnant. Harry became a war hero winning a major medal while his wife lived with Ben.
